So, after some delicate investigatory work, I found out that not only is it LEGAL to have Bonfires in NY, but Westhampton Beach actually even has a form/permit that you can get if you really want to be safe.
You can light it up right on the beach. Hooray! The only downside of getting the permit is having to pay the $30. I would venture to guess that you could just do it without a permit and put the fire out if (for some reason) the cops come.

I'm also pretty sure that a small fire would NOT constitute a 'bonfire'. So we should be all good, if you guys want to do it.
